Introduction

If you have read our blog post on aromatherapy, you've likely seen the word diffuser being mentioned as a convenient way to access this practice. As several studies have looked into this, it is now well established that you can derive the most amount of essential oil benefits, particularly by using these devices.

But why is this? We'll try to answer this question in the next lines, so keep reading if you're interested.

What is an aroma diffuser?

An aroma diffuser (also called an essential oil, oil or just diffuser) is a device that breaks down essential oils into smaller molecules and emits them into the air so they can be inhaled. The benefits it has on the mind and body are really wide and it all comes down to two things: the scent and the individual.

Types

Generally, there are 4 types of diffusers out there:

  • Nebulizing
  • Heat/electric
  • Evaporative
  • Ultrasonic

Their main difference comes down to the method of breaking down the essential oils into smaller particles. This is a key part of the process, as it determines what portion of the plant extracts benefits will be accessible for your body. We'll explain each one in more detail in the next lines, so you can gain a better understanding and decide which one is the perfect fit for your particular needs.

Heat / Electric

These diffusers use heat, most commonly electric, to turn the oils into gas. While this makes them silent, it's definitely not the optimal way to preserve the essential oil benefits, as heat can change widely their properties.

Heat diffusers and particularly the open-flame ones (think candles) are also not very child-friendly as they can lead to burns if not careful enough.

Still, they're relatively cheap, so they're a great option if you just want to fill your house with a great smell occasionally, without investing in a more convenient device.

Evaporative

Using a small fan to turn oils into mist, evaporators are a great option for those who don't want to spend a fortune on a diffuser but still want to get a great aromatherapy experience. They preserve the benefits of the oils quite well and make your house smell like a spa. They're also relatively quiet and safe, as there isn't an open flame involved in the process.

Ultrasonic

As the name suggests, ultrasonic diffusers use ultrasonic vibrations to create fine mist. They're a great option for those who already have some experience in aromatherapy and want to dive even deeper. One consideration is that they can be a little bit pricier than the heat or evaporative ones.

Nebulizing

The nebulizing diffusers are believed to be the best option when it comes down to overall experience and benefits. Modern technology which uses pressurized air, creates a vacuum that pulls out the oils on the surface, deluding them into the air. These devices don't use water or heat making them the safest option out there.

But there is one serious consideration: the price. Nebulizing diffusers cost a lost more than the other types and the truth is a beginner would hardly tell the difference. So keep this in mind if you're just in the beginning of your aromatherapy journey.

Benefits

As we previously mentioned, diffusers can lead to all kinds of different benefits, depending on the essential oil used and the particular person. We'll list a few here, but if you want to go more in-depth, our advice would be to check out our blog post on essential oils as well. A few examples of the benefits:

  • Reduced stress
  • Boosted mood
  • Better sleep
  • Enhanced memory
  • Boosted immune system
  • Alleviated joint pain

Safety considerations

Diffusers are generally safe devices if you care for them properly and avoid particularly strong essential oil scents.

That said, it's always better to consult with your doctor prior, especially if you're pregnant, have a small kid, or suffer from some kind of allergies or conditions like asthma.

As previously mentioned, pay extra attention if using a heat diffuser with small kids at home, so burns can be avoided.
